Greater Flameback




  1. The Greater Flameback’s scientific name is Chrysocolaptes lucidus. In Sri Lanka this bird is known as Le Pita Maha Kerala.
  2. This bird’s length is about 33 cm.
  3. The Greater Flameback’s family is picidae.
  4. It is an endemic bird in Sri Lanka.
  5. This bird’s back is dark red but its tail is black.
  6. The Greater Flameback is kind of a large woodpecker.
  7. This woodpecker’s bill is longer than its head.
  8. The adult male Greater Flameback has a red crown on its head.
  9. But the adult female Greater Flameback has a black crown on its head.
  10. The young Greater Flamebacks are just like the mother [female] but duller, with brown irides.
